Volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of Meal On Wheels.  The work we do would not be possible without the help of our volunteer family.  By volunteering just an hour or two of your time -  delivering a hot meal and a smile -  YOU can make a big difference in the lives of those who need it right in your own community.

GROUP VOLUNTEERING - ADOPT A ROUTE PROGRAM:

We are developing an Adopt-A-Route program  to expand our volunteer base by tailoring the volunteer commitment to fit the needs of volunteers in the workplace.  This is also ideal for a group who would like to share a weekly or monthly lunchtime commitment by adopting a Meals On Wheels route. Groups may include local businesses, community groups or church groups. Eight or more employees from an area employer/group agree to participate in meal delivery (with the employer's blessing), with each employee delivering meals approximately one time a month.  Adopt-A-Route is an easy and affordable way for employers and employees to  to give back to the community.  It is a minimal time commitment, but results in great satisfaction of helping others and increasing the feeling of team spirit.

Questions & Answers:    These are answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Volunteers generally deliver in the towns where they live. It will take about 1 to 1-1/2 hours to do a route depending on how many clients are on the route      on a particular day. How many times you deliver in a month is completely up to you. Current volunteers do once a month, twice a month and once a week.

Meals are delivered Monday - Friday between 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. (But you don't have to deliver everyday!)

Meals are picked up at a central location in each town. Examples are Town Hall, Library or Senior Lunch Centers.

You just let the office know as soon as you can and the staff will find a substitute for you.

You will require your own vehicle and have current insurance. Contact our office or use the volunteer application below. Our Volunteer Coordinator will then contact you. We will need your contact information, availability and 2 references.  We also require each volunteer to have a background check. This is done through the Wayne County Sheriff's office in Lyons.

Yes. A new volunteer comes to our office and has short training with our Volunteer Coordinator.  It takes a minimum of 30 minutes. A little longer depending on questions.  We also set you up to ride along with a current volunteer for your first time out.

Volunteers should call the office as soon as possible and we can assist with calling the clients family or emergency contact or if needed we will call 911. More information will be provided during training.

The Executive Director determines whether routes should be shut down for the day. This is posted on TV in the morning (just like a school closing) or the office will call and let you know.

More will be covered during the training process.

Be a Volunteer.....It will make your day!
